Dumplings always add a comforting dimension and are perfect for soaking up the gravy.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jameswhelanbutchers.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Beef-Stew-with-Dumplings.pdf\">Beef Stew with Dumplings &#8211; Printer Friendly Download<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Ingredients<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jameswhelanbutchers.com\/proddetail.php?prod=6153\">1 kg\/ 2.2 lb \u00a0braising steak, cut into cubes<\/a><\/li>\n<li>4 tablespoons plain flour<\/li>\n<li>Salt and pepper<\/li>\n<li>4 tablespoons vegetable oil<\/li>\n<li>2 large onions, chopped finely<\/li>\n<li>2 carrots, sliced<\/li>\n<li>2 celery stick, sliced<\/li>\n<li>1 turnip cup into cubes<\/li>\n<li>500 ml\/1 pint beef stock<\/li>\n<li>2 bay leaves<\/li>\n<li>2 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves or 1 teaspoon dried thyme<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">DUMPLINGS<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>145 g\/6 oz plain flour<\/li>\n<li>2 teaspoons baking powder<\/li>\n<li>\u00bd teaspoon salt<\/li>\n<li>\u00bd pint \u00a0milk<\/li>\n<li>2 tablespoons oil<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>To Cook<\/h2>\n<p>Combine the flour, salt and pepper in a plastic bag.\u00a0 Add the beef cubes and toss to coat. \u00a0\u00a0Heat the oil over a moderate heat in a large saucepan or flameproof casserole dish and add the beef cubes.\u00a0 Brown well on all sides.\u00a0 This should be done in batches, removing the meat from the pan to a warmed plate until all the meat is browned.<\/p>\n<p>Add the onion and cook until they start to turn translucent and then add the rest of the vegetables, stirring frequently to brown. Now return the beef to the pan and add the stock and herbs. Bring to the boil stirring well.<\/p>\n<p>Cover tightly and reduce heat to as low as possible.\u00a0 Simmer for at least 2 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately twenty minutes before serving\u00a0 turn up the heat and bring to the boil and add the dumplings.<\/p>\n<p>DUMPLINGS<\/p>\n<p>To make the dumplings, sift the dry ingredients into a bowl and add the oil and milk.\u00a0 Stir until the dry ingredients are mixed through and resemble a batter.
