We have had the privilege of serving generations of local families and witnessing first-hand the clubs, organisations, businesses and volunteers whose dedication helps make this town such an extraordinary place to live, work and raise a family.

This installation marks the tenth chapter in our ongoing series celebrating the people, places and institutions that shape life in Clonmel.

Today, we are proud to honour one of the town’s oldest and most respected organisations: Clonmel Rowing Club.

Founded in the nineteenth century, the club has stood as a constant presence through periods of enormous social and economic change. Throughout its history, it has provided a place where people from all walks of life could come together in pursuit of a common goal, united by effort, friendship and a shared pride in representing their town.

The story of Clonmel Rowing Club is, in many ways, the story of Clonmel itself.

It is a story of resilience.

A story of volunteerism.

A story of people working together to create opportunities for others.

Across generations, countless coaches, committee members, parents and supporters have given freely of their time to ensure that young people could experience the benefits of sport, teamwork and belonging. Their contribution extends far beyond the water.

The club has helped shape character, build confidence and foster lifelong friendships. It has produced athletes who have competed at the highest levels while remaining deeply connected to the community where their journey began.

Among them is Olympian Daire Lynch, who first learned to row on the River Suir before progressing to represent Ireland on the world stage. His achievements serve as a powerful reminder of what can happen when communities invest in young people and when local clubs provide the encouragement, mentorship and opportunity that help talent flourish.

Today, with more than 200 members, Clonmel Rowing Club continues to thrive, carrying forward a proud tradition while inspiring the next generation to follow in the footsteps of those who came before them.

For the Whelan family, the connection is also deeply personal.

Clonmel Rowing Club has been part of our family’s story for generations. Our founder James Whelan’s grandson, Tom, proudly rowed with the club before continuing his rowing journey with UCD. Like so many families throughout Clonmel, we have seen how the club helps build confidence, create friendships and open doors to opportunities that can last a lifetime.

But this installation is about more than rowing.

It is about leadership.

It is about stewardship.

It is about recognising those who quietly give their time, energy and expertise to strengthen the community around them.

In Ireland, we have a word for this spirit: meitheal.

The people featured in this installation embody that tradition.

Andrew Bourke, Dermot Dougan and Ruth Maher represent the generations of volunteers whose commitment helps sustain not only Clonmel Rowing Club but the wider social fabric of our town.

Andrew’s roots run deep in Clonmel and Tipperary. His mother, Mary, was a familiar face to many through her years working in Dunnes Stores, while his family’s connections stretch across the county.

Dermot’s story is equally woven into the fabric of the town. His father, Maurice Dougan, served generations of local families through the family chemist business in Oakville, becoming a trusted and respected presence within the community.

These stories matter.

They remind us that communities are built over generations through relationships, participation and service. The clubs we join, the businesses we support, the friendships we form and the places where we choose to spend our lives become part of a shared story that connects us all.

We are also deeply grateful to Tony and the team at Anne Fitzpatrick Florist, whose creativity and generosity transformed our window into a celebration of local pride, heritage and belonging.

A town is ultimately defined by its people.

The volunteers who show up.

The coaches who encourage.

The business owners who support.

The families who participate.

The individuals who quietly contribute every day, often without recognition, simply because they care.

They are the custodians of community.

They are the stewards of our shared future.

They are the people who make Clonmel what it is.

And they are the people we are proud to celebrate.

For more than 150 years, Clonmel Rowing Club has been part of the rhythm of life on the River Suir, helping generations of people discover not only the sport of rowing, but the values of commitment, teamwork and community. At James Whelan Butchers, we have always believed that the strength of a community is […]

[1269,267,18

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v14.4.1 -
